Sub Rolls

My family LOVES a good submarine sandwich but the rolls are Soooo expensive. So I have been working hard on making a tasty roll that would not only save me money but be a little bit healthier for my family. Using my bread machine they were pretty easy to make.

1 Cup Water
2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 1/2 Cups white Flour
1 Egg
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Teaspoon Salt
3 Teaspoons Yeast

Now I'll admit this is the first time I have ever put egg into a roll recipe so I was a bit worried and I'm not even sure what the egg does.lol These were so yummy though :O) Just put all these ingredients into your bread machine and put on the dough setting.Mine is an hour and 20 minutes long. When it is finished turn out onto a lightly floured surface and cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and shape into submarine rolls. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 30-40 minutes. Place the rolls about 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet and brush with melted butter. Bake at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes :O)

If We Can Save One Person

Then this post will be worth it. Every day 18 veterans resort to suicide to end their pains. Not just the physical pain but the emotional pains that haunt them. Please pass then on if we can help one vet from their suffering and through this hard time then it has been worth all the time spent spreading the message.

It's a Rather Blustery Day Outside

If you have ever been to Texas in the Spring time you know that it means wind. I'm not talking normal wind either, but wind that could move a mountain, maybe that is why it is called Levelland.lol On days like today there is really nothing good to do. You can't go outside because if you don't blow over you run the risk of not being able to breath thanks to a little thing I call allergies. So instead I curl up on the couch with one of the cutest children I happen to know and watch a classic. If you have never seen Winnie The Pooh it really is a must see for every child. What is your favorite childhood movie??

When Tuesday Feels Like Monday

It is days like today I wonder why aren't all days just called Monday??lol At 10:00 am it is already a day of what can go wrong will go wrong. I have a lot of things in planning, I've started experimenting with my crockpot and on the first we will start a 31 day crockpot challenge where I will cook every day in my crockpot :O). I can never have to many of these recipes since as life goes on my time seems to be stretched further and further between activities and I like to spend as much time as possible with my family. I'm working on a savings and money saving section and my garden is well in the works. Hope you all will join me as I head on this journey.

Laundry Soap

I did a project with a fellow blogger last year making laundry soap and I won't lie I was a bit skeptical about how well homemade laundry soap would work. Now really $20 for a whole years worth of soap*insert eye roll* yeah right. Well I made it and I can tell you I will NEVER buy laundry soap at a store again. The best part about this is it is pretty simple to make and you only really have to do it once a year if you want.

Here is what you will need. These things can all be bought down Walmart'a laundry isle and most other stores :O)

  • Borax(2 boxes)
  • Washing Soda(2 boxes)
  • Baking Soda(1 big box=4 pounds)
  • 5 bars of soap(they come in many different varieties you can really use any soap including bath soap)
  • 1 LARGE container(I use an old cat food bucket)
  • Cheese grater
Now really the directions are pretty simple. The least enjoyable part is grating all the soap. For some reason this time my soap was really soft so it literally looked like cheese but as it sits it will dry out and break apart :O)

After you have done that the best way to mix it all together is to layer it in you container then with a big spoon turn it. If you have extra space then you can simply put the lid on and roll it :O) I think I am going to buy a 5 gallon bucket so I can do this. I only make this about once a year for a family of 5 so if you have fewer people or just want to you can make it in smaller batches.

**Forgot to add when I use this I use 1/8 of a cup for a normal load and 1/4 cup for really dirty loads :O)**

Motivational Monday

Well it is Monday.......need I really say more?? Lately my motivation has lacked almost completely and I have realized I have been letting myself slip back into this can't do it attitude. While sitting on my computer doing nothing but playing on Farmville and Pinterest I came across something that reminded me I can do it.
Now to most people this may not be motivation but I have been there. I've been pushed further then I have ever been pushed by my trainer which was no easy task. He has shared some of his NFL workout moves with me and I succeeded yet I sat here thinking I can't do it. So really the only thing I can't do is make excuses because really I can do it and so can you ;O)

Cheesy Pull-apart Fun!

I got the general idea for this off Pinterest but sadly it was just a picture so I had to try to create it on my own. I think I did a pretty good job to ;o)

1 Batch Pizza Dough
3 Tbsp Butter
1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Italian Seasoning

As my pizza dough rose I tossed ideas back and forth for the easiest yet most effective way to do this. Pizza dough tends to be very elastic and isn't easily just rolled out, but I stretched and rolled it the best I could into long strips about 4 inches wide. I then took my Mozzarella cheese and put it in a line down the middle of the strip. I then rolled it over almost like you would if making a burrito. Then I cut them into pieces about 2 inches long and tucked them into a ball shape. After I got them all balled up I melted the butter in a small bowl and mix in the garlic and Italian seasoning. I put a layer of the dough and cheese balls in the bottom and on the sides of the pan. After a single layer I applied more butter to the top of them and then added another layer. After they were all layered I put the in the oven on 350 for about 25-35 minutes. :O) Now I did have some issues getting the middle ones cooked all the way so for faster cooking simply spread them out in one layer on a cookie sheet rather then stacking them :O)
To serve them I did the thing that would make every cardiologist pass out :OP I took the remaining butter and mixed it in with some spaghetti sauce Mmm....in made a perfect dipping sauce!

Easy Peazy Pizza Dough

I was sitting here thinking about what in the world I could make for lunch and really started craving PIZZA! Problem being it is well below freezing and the roads are pure ice outside. I have never tried creating a pizza dough of my own so I thought hmmm......why not. After all I still have 5 bags of flour in my pantry that I had found on sale. I Googled some basic recipes and they were ALL different.lol So I kinda winged it and combined them all to try to make what felt perfect to me.

2 Tsp Yeast
2 Tbsp Sugar
1.5 Cups of Warm Water
4.5 Cups of Flour
2 Tsp Salt
1 Tsp Oil

Now this is a fairly simple recipe because......well I enjoy simple. Start by mixing the yeast and sugar into a medium sized bowl. Pour the Water of the top and let sit for about 5 minutes. This will make the yeast active and it will get all foamy and smell kinda bad. :op Next mix together salt and 4 cups of flour and then mix into the yeast water. After you have combined this you will turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes. Personally I hate this part and considered leaving it out.lol I didn't know how bad it would ruin the dough though. The remaining flour you may or may not need in order to keep the dough from sticking. After you have finished kneading the dough place into a bowl which you have oiled. Cover and let sit in a warm area for about an hour. Then when it is finished you can make your pizzas or whichever creation you chose :O). This dough will last for several days in the fridge and from what I read can even be frozen for several months.

Snowy Sunday

Well I guess Mr.Groundhog was right because winter has come to West Texas in full force this weekend. After a chilling 35 degrees yesterday we are at a bone chilling 21 degrees at the moment and the snow is coming down! Not sure I am quite ready for this though as last time it snowed we discovered a leak in the roof that will only be fixed by replacing the roof, which is due to happen this coming weekend. What today will be perfect for is baking some cookies for the children's upcoming Valentines parties :O) nothing high tech or fancy today just some simple Pillsbury Chocolate Peppermint cookies. I found these during Christmas time so when they started marking  these down, needless to say I bought a ton.lol

The Right Way........

Growing up I think we are all told how we should do things. Do good in school, be good to your parents, be nice to your friends.....the list could go on and on. Anyone with children knows that just as our parents hoped and prayed for these things so do we, and really we are lucky to get half of what we had hoped for. Looking back at life I know I can admit I have done many things wrong and my path has been more of a maze then anything. Yet I sit here today looking at my life and know I wouldn't change a thing. It may not have been the easiest path or the right path all the time but it has led me to an amazing place, and really changed my perspective as a parent. Take some time to sit back today and think about all the struggles you have faced and remember when your children do something you may not like or approve of they have to find their path.

Toilet Paper Roll Bird Feeder

Living here in West Texas it really never get cold enough that the birds decide to leave, however food does become very hard for them to find. After my first year here finding bird after bird that appeared to simply fall from their nest while sleeping because of starvation I started to put out feed during the winter months. Occasionally I still do ind a bird or two but the numbers have greatly decreased, which as an animal lover brings a smile to my face. As a child I remember making pine cone bird feeders and loved watching the birds pick them apart. Since pine trees are hard to find around here I decided to try something new, toilet paper rolls :O) It is really simple to do, all you need is toilet paper rolls, peanut butter, and seed. All you really need to do is spread a thin layer of peanut butter onto your toilet paper roll and then roll in seed. The best part about these is they fit over most any branch! After the bird seed is gone it is fun to watch the birds take tiny pieces of the toilet paper roll to use for their nests.
