Four Fun Family Vacations

Four Fun Family Vacations
By Alexandra Jacobs
If you're planning a summer vacation for your family, you want the time spent to be fun and memorable. There are so many great vacation destinations in the US it may be hard to choose one, but here are four places that will ensure family memories for years to come.
New York City

New York City is called “the city that never sleeps” for a good reason. There are so many things to see and do, it's impossible to get to all of them in one trip, but you must visit Manhattan. New York City Real Estate includes skyscrapers that dot the sky amidst the hustle and bustle of pedestrians, taxicabs, shops, restaurants and never-ending nightlife. You can book an all day guided shuttle tour or set your own pace, but either way there are must-see attractions: The Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty; Times Square and Madison Square Gardens; World Trade Center Memorial; Museum of Modern Art; St. Patrick's Cathedral; and Radio City Music Hall. An affordable boutique hotel in Manhattan, The Hotel Alexander, is located near Central Park. It's a block away from the subway and surrounded by great restaurants like Three Guys Restaurant that serves American, Greek and Italian cuisine.
Cape Cod

This quaint New England city is reminiscent of a sleepy little town where life is simple. With only two bridges that connect the cape to the mainland, once you're there you immediately feel the serenity of the sea and salt air. In addition to enjoying the beautiful seashore, there are fun adventures for the family: The Cape Cod Rail Trail offers 22 miles of paved trail through the countryside that's great for biking or horseback riding; Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge has 7000 scenic acres inhabited by seabirds and seals; Heritage Museum and Gardens houses the J.K. Lilly III Antique Automobile Collection for dad, a folk art collection for mom, and an antique hand-carved carousel for the kids. The Chatham Bars Inn, built in 1914, offers hotel rooms and cottages, all with seaside views and two restaurants that serve New England cuisine.
US Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands are a Caribbean paradise where you can enjoy carnivals, authentic creole food and treasure hunting while soaking up sunshine and beautiful ocean views. There are three islands to visit: St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix. St. John is quieter with miles of beaches and parks. St. Thomas is the shopper's dream with designer shops, antiques and island goods. St. Croix is an adventure island where you can visit sugar cane plantations and old rum distilleries. This relaxing atmosphere where lizards and iguanas run freely, gives you time to breathe and enjoy the simply pleasures of life. Marriott's Frenchman's Cove Hotel, nestled in the hillside on St. Thomas, offers beautiful rooms overlooking the bay and several restaurants with island cuisine. Island hop to St. John and eat at Miss Lucy's for great Caribbean dishes or to St. Croix and check out Pleasants for the best burgers.
Los Angeles

Take a trip to the west coast and the “city of angels”, Los Angeles. The weather is always pleasant and there is never a shortage of things to see and do. Santa Monica and Venice beaches offer swimming, relaxing in the sun and outdoor activities like bicycling and surfing. Venture into Hollywood and take a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard where you can visit Grauman's Chinese Theater and The Wax Museum full of life-like wax figures of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson. As you walk down the street, you can enjoy the Hollywood Walk of Fame with celebrity stars under your feet. The Hollywood Bowl is an outdoor concert hall that offers music concerts ranging from jazz to rock. A short trip from Hollywood, Universal Studios offers fun rides, movies and tours of the movie lot. The Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites, centrally located in Hollywood, offers a free hot breakfast bar and affordable rates. The Sunset Strip is walking distance and it's a short drive to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Be sure to dine at Miceli's in Hollywood for the best pizza or The Roosevelt Hotel for old world charm and 5 star dining.

I've never been to NYC. Technically, we've driven through, but that's not quite the same. Maybe one day!
I would love to take my son to NYC to visit all of the art museums!

I've always wanted to go to Cape Cod. It just seems like such a quaint place. I love the northern east coast.

To be honest, Cape Cod also looks like the coolest place on that list. It is too hot to even think about a city or a beach at the moment. I know--too hot for a beach? But all I want to do is hang out in a 65 degree weather...

Cape Cod is some place I would love to go to. Being a native Californian, I have never seen the allure of Los Angeles. I guess I am not a big city girl, either.

I've been to NYC and LA, but both were school trips in HS so we didn't see much unless it was a group tour. I have since wanted to go back and do my own thing. I'd love to visit Cape Cod and Virgin Islands. :)

Jello Hard Candy

Most hard candies call for corn syrup, but since I was out and I have 3 children home I decided to experiment and make something fun! Here is what you need:
2 Cups of Sugar
2 Cups of Water
1 Package Sugar Free Jello
A candy Thermometer

Making candy is a pretty tricky process and trust me I messed up a batch or two getting this to work right.lol Put the sugar and water into the pot and turn on medium whisking well till the sugar is dissolved. Stirring pretty regularly to help the sugar from burning. As the sugar begin to boil turn the heat up to high. Watch your thermometer when the candy reaches 230 pour in the jello continuing to mix. Pour this mixture immediately into a cake pan that is lined with parchment paper of you can rub a little veggie oil in it. The candy will continue to cook as it melts anything over 230 you will be left with a burnt candy that tastes like licorice.lol After you candy is cooled completely turn it out onto a cookie sheet and break apart :O) I like to dust mine …
